Wild nature and rural Sicily was the favourite backdrop for Whilhelm Von Gloeden’s tableaux vivants, depicting male subjects of rare beauty, in a mythological Arcadia of freedom, armony and desire: a provocation for the early 20th century society that made his success yet caused his censure. Organic and simple forms imbued Guido Andovitz’s work in a way that was completely revolutionary in pottery makers of his times. It is surprising to observe how going back to origins and spontaneity can be perceived as disruptive. Or is humankind just afraid of its ancestral need to blend with nature?
