Joel-Peter Witkin was born in Brooklyn in 1939. Drawing from a rich body of sources—literature, myth, Renaissance and Baroque painting, and his own personal background—he creates elaborate images that address the morbid, the perverse, the erotic, and the religious. In nearly all his works, these moral issues are acted out by social outcasts, pariahs, human oddities, and cadavers, which inspire his work as he confronts the viewers’ sense of normalcy.
Witkin’s fascination with death and corpse portions was triggered by a life-altering episode at a very early age; he witnessed an automobile accident in front of his house in which a young girl was decapitated.
